Canford Cliffs’ Melbourne Cup hope on display this weekend

13th Oct 2017

Canford Cliffs, who is scheduled to stand at Highlands Stud next year, is the sire of potential G1 Melbourne Cup runner Wall Of Fire.

The latter makes his Australian debut on Saturday when set to carry top-weight in the G2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes over 2400m at Caulfield.

Wall Of Fire, whose rivals include recent G1 Metropolitan winner Foundry, will be ridden by Mark Zahra in Saturday’s $400 000 contest.

Trainer Hugo Palmer admitted to being concerned about the weight his charge would carry, but did say, “He’s a remarkable horse, really. He won his first career start over 1200m as a two-year-old, and he’s won races over a mile, a mile-and-a-quarter, mile-and-a-half, mile-six-and-a-half (2900m), so he’s won over a range of distances which makes him versatile. He goes on all ground.’

The four-year-old colt was a close second on his last start when under a length off Defoe in the G3 Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes last time out.

Wall Of Fire is one of 15 stakes performers for five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs this year. Others include Derby winner Dorset Noble and top class filly Al Jazi, winner of the G3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Oak Tree Stakes for a second year running.
