Canford Cliffs strikes in Australia

21st Oct 2017

Five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs, due to stand at Highlands Stud in 2018, was represented by an impressive Group winner in Australia on Saturday.

His son Cliff’s Edge made all to land the G3 Ladbrokes Classic in eye catching fashion, and looks a natural prospect for the G1 Victoria Derby following his win in this $350 000 contest. Cliff’s Edge was steered to victory in the 2000m contest by John Allen, who guided the colt to a 2.75 length win.

His trainer Darren Weir said after the fluent success (a first group win for Cliff’s Edge), “He’s got a great racing style. When you can train him like you can at home, the soundness of the horse, you are able to make him tough. He copes with the work really well and that’s why he loves bowling along out in front, he relaxes so well.

“His last run toughened him up. Getting back to Caulfield where he dictated and kicked away on the corner, it was always going to be a differently run race.

“I suppose you’d have to have a throw at the stumps (in the Victoria Derby) the way he went today

Cliff’s Edge, an eighth stakes winner for his classic winning sire, has now won four of just eight outings and has earned AUS$449 810.

Canford Cliffs is also sire of leading Melbourne Cup Wall Of Fire, a good second under top weight in the G2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes recently, with other notable runners representing the former star miler including dual G3 L’Ormarins Queens Plate Oak Tree Stakes winner Al Jazi, the group winning 2yos Painted Cliffs and Most Beautiful, and Investec Oaks third Harlequeen.
