Champion sire dominates feature races –once again!

9th Oct 2017

Not for the first time in recent years, Maine Chance Farms’ top sire Silvano dominated feature race action over the weekend.
The dual South African champion sire (who headed the list again last season) was responsible for Saturday’s G2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge winner Bella Sonata, and is also broodmare sire of the weekend’s G2 Joburg Spring Challenge hero Wonderwall (out of the Silvano mare Westwardly) and G3 Diana Stakes winner Goodtime Gal (out of Silvano mare Tirza) .

Bred by the Riyo Stud, Bella Sonata (runner up in the 2016 Spring F&M Challenge) had been something of a bridesmaid prior to her half length win in Saturday’s R400 000 contest and had finished second in the 2017 G1 Empress Club Stakes and third in the G1 Garden Province Stakes.

Out of the Singspiel mare Bella Cantata, Bella Sonata was a R700 000 purchase at the 2014 National Sale.

The five-year-old’s win on Saturday (the fifth of Bella Sonata’s career) pushed her earnings to just under R1 000 000.

Bella Sonata is one of an impressive 12 individual stakes winners produced by Silvano’s 2012 foal crop. Other notables from that crop include July winning champion Marinaresco, and the G1 winning fillies Nightingale (Majorca Stakes) and Silver Mountain (Cape Fillies Guineas).

Another Silvano daughter to impress over the weekend was Sylvan On Fire, with that progressive four-year-old making it four wins on the bounce for owner-breeder Vanessa Harrison. Trained by Candace Dawson, Sylvan On Fire ran on powerfully to register her fourth win from just six outings when triumphant over 1800m on Turffontein’s inside track.

The sire has five potential runners in the upcoming G1 Sansui Summer Cup, including his top class daughters Orchid Island and Wind Chill.

Sire of 20 individual G1 winners (and four individual Vodacom Durban July winners), Silvano has five lots on the 2017 CTS Ready To Run Sale.
