Varsfontein Stud’s successful resident stallion Judpot gained a handsome boost to his pedigree following the running of the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas on Sunday.
The 1600m classic was won by Alpha Centauri –whose third dam is the great racemare and producer Miesque (dam of Judpot himself).
Ridden by Colm O’Donoghue, the talented 3yo filly, a daughter of Mastercraftsman, romped home to register a 1.75 length victory in the 2018 Irish 1000 Guineas.
Trained by Jessica Harrington, Alpha Centauri stayed on to beat Could It Be Love, with multiple G1 winner and favourite, Happily, only third.
Runner up in last year’s G3 Albany Stakes, Alpha Centauri has now won three of her six outings.
The filly’s second dam is Judpot’s dual French classic winning half-sister East Of The Moon (by Private Account). The ten time G1 winning Miesque (one of the greatest racemares in history and also dam of outstanding stallion Kingmambo) is also second dam of brilliant 2018 G2 Prix Greffuhle winner Study Of Man -a likely contender for the upcoming Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby).
Judpot, himself a former Equus Outstanding Stallion, has been enjoying another fine season in 2017, with his runners including 2018 G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge winner Coral Fever, G2 Daisy Guineas runner up Sniper Shot, and hugely promising 2yo filly Nous Voila.
A son of dual US champion sire A P Indy, Judpot has three lots on offer at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, including a filly out of G3 Yellowwood Handicap runner up Cyclone Michelle (with this filly inbred to Miesque) (Lot 139) and a filly from the same family as outstanding sire and broodmare sire Pivotal (Lot 233).
