Cliffs high up on European Sires List

5th Sep 2017

Highlands Stud’s new sire prospect Canford Cliffs, who will stand his first season in South Africa in 2018, is currently one of the leading Third Crop Sires in Europe.

The five time G1 winner and Irish classic hero is currently the fourth leading Third Crop Sire, by individual winners, for 2017.

According to respected publication EBN, Canford Cliffs has been represented by 47 winners in Europe for 2017, and is behind only Poet’s Voice, Zoffany and Dream Ahead on this table.

His top offspring include dual G3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Oak Tree Stakes winner Al Jazi and G1 Melbourne Cup entrant Wall Of Fire, who was a close runner up in the recent G3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury. He is also responsible for the very promising Irish 2yo Goodthingstaketime, who was a close up second in the G3 Curragh Stakes recently and who holds an entry in the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes.

Another by Canford Cliffs, G1 Investec Oaks third Harlequeen, has been entered in the G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at the beginning of October.
Canford Cliffs, from the same male line as Roberto, Sunday Silence, Deep Impact and Dynaformer, was an exceptional racehorse whose seven wins included the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, G1 Sussex Stakes, G1 St James’s Palace Stakes and G1 Queen Anne Stakes and he also won the G2 Coventry Stakes, at two, by a devastating six lengths.

Among the notable horses he defeated were triple Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Goldikova and multiple G1 winner Rip Van Winkle.
