Ridgemont’s red hot resident Redoute’s Choice sire Rafeef had another good day on Wednesday, with the erstwhile G1 Computaform Sprint winner responsible for two winners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.
Rafeef struck first when his two-year-old daughter Mamas Baby made a winning debut to claim the second race at Scottsville. Under a strong ride from an inform Anthandiwe Mgudlwa, the Gareth Van Zyl trained filly ran on strongly down the inside of the track to claim the Nashua PMB Maiden Juvenile Plate (1000m) by a neck.
Bred by Narrow Creek Stud, Mamas Baby is out of the Var mare Black Velvet and is thus bred on the same Rafeef/Var cross as G1 winners Master Archie and Thunderstruck.
The filly, an R420 000 purchase from the 2022 KZN Yearling Sale, is the eighth two-year-old winner in South Africa this season for Rafeef, with the latter’s promising two-year-old son Outlaw King running a creditable second in the recent G1 Gold Medallion.
Mamas Baby has an Oratorio half-brother on offer at this year’s KZN Yearling Sale.
Rafeef is also the sire of Moya Wa Laliga who defied his 14-1 starting price to win the eighth and final race for Gareth Van Zyl and Anthandiwe Mgudlwa in fine fashion. The four-year-old powered clear in the closing stages to score by over a length and a half while taking his tally of wins to two.
Bred by Mr van Tonder, Moya Wa Laliga is out of the Galileo mare Mrs Everest and is bred on the same cross as G1 WSB SA Derby winner Aragosta.
Also sire of Saturday’s G1 Golden Sprint runner-up Thunderstruck, Rafeef is set to be joined at stud this year by his G1 Computaform Sprint winning son Master Archie. The latter is set to stand his first season at the Winterbach Stud in 2023 and looks to be an exciting addition to the Cape stallion band.
