Lammerskraal Stud will be offering buyers a last chance to acquire a daughter of one of South Africa’s most influential stallions at Friday week’s CTS Ready To Run Sale.
Awayinthewoods (lot 119) is a daughter of Mauritzfontein’s late, champion sire Fort Wood and she is the only two-year-old on sale by that distinguished stallion, whose last crop this is.
As a G1 winning son of legendary champion sire Sadler’s Wells and the great broodmare Fall Aspen, expectations were always high for Fort Wood, and he more than lived up to them at stud. South Africa’s Champion Sire in 1998-1999, Fort Wood left behind 76 stakes winners (15 G1 winners), and another 80 black type performers. More than 16% of his foals were either stakes winners or stakes placed runners.
Best known for siring such outstanding champion as Horse Chestnut, Celtic Grove and Dynasty (now one of South Africa’s premier stallions), Fort Wood also had a string of top class daughters to his name.
His daughters included six G1 winners (notably Equus Champions Dog Wood and Wendywood), as well as such high class fillies as Cover Look, Dog Rose, Monyela, and Carolina Cherry.
Fort Wood’s influence continues to be felt as an outstanding broodmare sire, and he has headed the South African Broodmare Sires List for the past three years running (Fort Wood once again heads the broodmare sires list for 2017-2018).
Among the top performers produced by Fort Wood daughters are the likes of G1 winners Marinaresco (Vodacom Durban July, Champions Cup), Thunder Dance (Paddock Stakes, Empress Club Stakes), Cherry On The Top (Champion, won Triple Tiara), Contador (Golden Horse Sprint), Nightingale (Majorca Stakes), Captain America (Horse Chestnut Stakes, Gold Challenge), William Longsword (Cape Guineas, sire) and Real Princess (SA Fillies Sprint).
He is also broodmare sire of the top class US galloper Pluck (winner of the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) and his US G3 winning half-sister Three Hearts.
With his sons Dynasty and Elusive Fort firing on all cylinders, and Fort Wood daughters going strong, the final chapter is yet to be written in the remarkable career of this great sire.
A half-sister to no fewer than nine winners, including G1 2yo Kilcoy Castle, the racy, well balanced Awayinthewoods, whose dam is a six time stakes winning daughter of Western Winter and Fillies Guineas winner She’s A Treat, has plenty to recommend her on pedigree and is a must see for any serious buyer!
