French Group success for Byword brother

6th Aug 2018

Finche, a half-brother to the well performed Byword, made it win number three, from eight outings, when victorious in the G3 Prix Valparaiso Sporting Club-Prix de Reux at Deauville on Sunday.

The flashy chestnut, who was winning for a first time since capturing the 2017 G2 Prix Eugene Adam last July, made all to land Sunday’s G3 feature by 1.75  and 2.5 lengths over previous group winners Tiberian and Called To The Bar respectively.

The chestnut four-year-old son of Frankel holds an entry in the 2018 G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

“He is a very decent horse when there is rhythm in the race,” Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said. “We’ll see what Mr. Fabre wantsto do, but the [Aug. 26 G2] Grand Prix de Deauville is a possibility if the ground remains good.”

Finche is one of three group winners produced by the excellent Woodman mare Binche- dam also of Byword (G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes), and Proviso (G1 Frank E.Kilroe Mile). Binche is also second dam of recent Listed Prix de Bagatelle winner Environs (by Dansili) and the promising Frankel sired 2yo winner Delaware.

Binche’s third dam is the remarkable producer Peace, the ancestress of such G1 winners as Quiet Fling, Wandesta, Zambezi Sun and Continent.

His half-brother Byword, whose 2yos last season include G3 winner Rain Spider and G1 contender Crown And Country, will be represented by 16 lots at this month’s National Two Year Old Sale. The son of legendary champion Peintre Celebre’s draft includes a half-sister (Lot 4) to East Cape Nursery/Dahlia Plate winner Oomph, a colt (Lot 199) from the same family as Fort Wood, Dubai Millennium and Timber Country, and a half-brother (Lot 239) to Equus Champion Hermoso Mundo.
