Ridgemont Highlands’ five time G1 winning sire Canford Cliffs was in the news this weekend as a broodmare sire.
The former star miler’s daughter Bumbasina is the dam of star Australian filly Amelia’s Jewel, who ran out an impressive winner of Saturday’s G2 Sky Racing – WA Guineas at Ascot in Australia.
Trained by Simon Miller, Amelia’s Jewel was still strung up in a tightly-bunched field rounding the home turn in Saturday’s WA Guineas.
But clear galloping room brought rapid acceleration as Amelia’s Jewel justified the hype about her as she proved too strong for the previously unbeaten Bustler.
Miller confirmed he would aim Amelia’s Jewel at the Group 1 Northerly Stakes over 1800m at Ascot on December 3.
Such was the dominance of the Guineas win, bookmakers elevated the WA wonder filly to $3.00 favourite for the Northerly Stakes.
A three-year-old daughter of Siyouni, Amelia’s Jewel has now won five of just six races, with the classy filly having also captured the G2 Amelia Park -Karrakatta Plate at two.
Her broodmare sire Canford Cliffs made a bright start to his stud career in South Africa, where his first locally bred and born two-year-olds included dual stakes winner Cliff Top and G1 Thekwini Stakes runner up Rock The Fox. The latter also caught the eye when she ran third in Friday night’s G3 TAB4Racing Fillies Mile and looks on course for another good season in 2022-2023.
