Impressive debut winner for Gimmethegreenlight

26th Jul 2018

In-form sire and G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight enjoyed more juvenile success at the Vaal on Thursday.
The son of More Than Ready was responsible for a very impressive debut winner in the form of Gimme A Wave, who defied greenness to win over 1200m by nearly three lengths.

Trained by Alec Laird, and bred by Jan Mantel, Gimme A Wave ended up 2.8 lengths clear of the chasing pack to make a smart first impression.

The gelding, who was produced by the National Emblem mare Ocean Ridge, was a R200 000 buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale.

Gimme A Wave is the 16th juvenile winner this season for Gimmethegreenlight –whose 2yo runners have dominated the finish to such races as the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe and Listed Gatecrasher Stakes in 2018.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, Gimmethegreenlight’s notable flagbearers this season have included the soon to be exported G1 Daily News 2000 winner Surcharge, G2 Camellia Stakes winner Green Plains (who has banked nearly R900 000 in stakes) and G2 Golden Horseshoe hero Barahin.

Another by the sire, Beataboutthebush, made news when victorious in last Friday’s Listed East Cape Paddock Stakes.

Gimmethegreenlight, whose sire is responsible for 2018 G1 winners Catholic Boy and Funtastic, will be represented by 11 lots at next month’s National Two Year Old Sale, with his draft including a half-sister to stakes winner Jet Jamboree (Lot17), a daughter of G1 Empress Club Stakes winner Fair Maiden (Lot 245), and a full-brother to G3 Magnolia Handicap winner Green Pepper (Lot 435).
