Fresh off his close relative Alpha Centauri landing the 2018 G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, the family of Varsfontein Stud’s successful stallion Judpot was back in the news at Chantilly on Sunday.
This time it was Study Of Man (by Deep Impact) who won a European feature, with that 3yo colt landing the G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) over 2100m on Sunday. Trained by Pascal Bary, Study Of Man was ridden to a half length win in Sunday’s classic by Stephane Pasquier.
Now a winner of three of only four races, Study Of Man had won the G2 Prix Greffulhe by 3.5 lengths last time out. The colt was given a quote of10-1 for the Arc following his French Derby victory.
Alan Cooper, racing manager to winning owners the Niarchos family, said: “He did it very well and he’s shown what Pascal and Stephane have always thought of him was correct – he’s a top-class horse. After he won the Prix Greffulhe it was either come here or go to Epsom (for the Investec Derby) and we decided to stay at this distance (mile and a quarter) for the moment. We’ll regroup now and see whether he could be a horse for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but let’s not jump to any conclusions.”
Study Of Man, a brother in blood to G1 Dubai Turf winner Real Steel (by Deep Impact), is out of the Storm Cat mare Second Happiness –a Storm Cat half-sister to a pair of other French classic winners in Kingmambo and East Of The Moon, as well as Judpot himself.
His second dam is legendary racemare and producer Miesque, whose 14 wins included both the 1987 and 1988 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Her A P Indy sired son Judpot has enjoyed another good season in 2017-2018, with his notable runners including G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge hero Coral Fever, Daisy Guineas second Sniper Shot and promising 2yo filly Nous Voila. The latter is a runner in Saturday’s Listed Kenilworth Fillies Nursery at Kenilworth.
Judpot has three lots on offer at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale.
