11th Jan 2017

Klawervlei Stud’s exciting young sire Pomodoro has an exciting first draft of yearlings on offer at next week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

The July winning son of seven times champion sire Jet Master was an exceptionally versatile and talented racehorse, who won from 1160m to 2450m and earned over R3.7 million in prize money during a career which saw him establish himself as one of the best gallopers around.
One of 22 individual G1 winners for his sire, Pomodoro’s eight wins included an historic triumph in the 2012 G1 Vodacom Durban July, where he accounted for no fewer than eight individual G1 winners.

The bay also won the G1 SA Derby, G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes and Listed KZN Guineas Trial and was placed in a further four Grade One races.

Among the notable horses defeated by Pomodoro during his stellar career were such G1 winners/champions as Beach Beauty, Pierre Jourdan, Martial Eagle, Slumdogmillionaire, English Garden, Jackson, Potala Palace, Heavy Metal, What A Winter, Master Plan and former leading first crop sire Gimmethegreenlight.

Bred on the same Jet Master/ Northern Guest cross as champion sprinter J J The Jet Plane, Pomodoro is out of recently deceased Broodmare Of The Year Golden Apple.
The latter, who produced four stakes horses including G2 winner Golden Chariot, was also a top class racemare whose wins included the G2 Gosforth Park Fillies Guineas and ranked as one of the best fillies of her generation.

This is the same family as legendary sire Danzig, whose numerous top class sires include such outstanding stallions as Danehill, Green Desert and War Front.

Klawervlei Stud’s John Koster likes what he has seen of Pomodoro’s first crop, saying, “They are all of good size, on the leg and have plenty of scope. They walk well and are very athletic types.”

The July winner has six quality lots on offer at the Premier Sale, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on January 21st and 22nd. Pomodoro’s draft includes:

Lot 33 –a half brother to 3 winners, this colt (inbred to legendary racemare and producer Glorious Song) is out of a winning daughter of a 20 time stakes winner in North America

Lot 38 – a half brother to a 2yo stakes horse, this colt is out of a winning half sister to 4 stakes winners including Dubai feature race winner Silver Mist and top sprinter Shades Of Indigo

Lot 45 – this colt is out of a winning Silvano half sister to six time stakes winning sprinter Dressed In Cotton, and is from the same family as 16 time stakes winner Celtic Fire

Lot 130 – out of a half sister to 2 black type performers, this colt’s second dam is a three parts sister to ill-fated G1 Fillies Guineas winner Yquem

Lot 170 –a half brother to 2 winners, this colt is out of a stakes placed winner of seven, and is from the same family as champions Kiss Of Peace and Harry Hotspur as well as the smart Top Jet –a son of Pomodoro’s sire Jet Master

Lot 179 – a half brother to 3 winners, this colt’s second dam is former champion 2yo Scented Royal –who also is ancestress of top sprinters Sweet Sanette and Franny, top class G2 winner Chekilli and current smart 3yo Janoobi

As a July winning son of a champion sire out of a broodmare of the year by a champion sire, Pomodoro clearly has plenty going for him as a potential top class stallion!
