Highlands Farms Stud’s in form sire Great Britain enjoyed another good weekend, when his tally of winners included a pair of juvenile scorers.

First of the Great Britain 2yos to score was the Riverton Stud bred Al Mariachi, who made all to win over 1200m –downing red hot 1-4 favourite Kasimir in the process.
Trained by Brett Crawford, Al Mariachi (who was making just his second racetrack appearance on Saturday) was a R70 000 purchase from last year’s Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale.

Judging by the style of Al Mariachi’s win, this looks a good buy at the price!

Al Mariachi’s paternal half-brother Whorly Whorly made it a 2yo double for Great Britain when running out a convincing winner over 1400m on Saturday. Bred by Mike Sharkey, the gelding stayed on strongly to beat the well bred first timers Wonderous Climber and Like A Panther by 0.8 of a length and two lengths respectively.

Out of the G3 winning Joshua Dancer mare Swingtime, Whorly Whorly was a R60 000 buy –from the same sale as Al Mariachi!

Great Britain is also sire of recent feature race winners Hashtag Strat and Wrecking Ball.

The full brother to pensioned outstanding sire Cape Cross has two lots on the upcoming March Yearling Sale – a colt (bred on the same cross as Great Britain’s feature race winner Hashtag Strat) out of a winning daughter of Windrush (Lot 164), and a colt out of National Assembly’s stakes placed winner of seven Darwin (Lot 216).
