Melbourne Cup runners for Canford Cliffs, Duke Of Marmalade

6th Nov 2017

Duke Of Marmalade, who stands at Drakenstein Stud, and Canford Cliffs, a future resident of Highlands Stud, will both be represented by runners in tomorrow’s G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup –one of the world’s greatest horse-races.

Marmelo

Duke Of Marmalade, whose daughter Daphne recently became his 35th individual stakes winner, is the sire of talented British hope Marmelo.
Rated a serious contender by many experts, the Hughie Morrison trained five-year-old was a close up sixth in the G1 Caulfield Cup when making his Australian debut last time out. Marmelo, described by his trainer as “potentially the best I’ve trained,”, has won both the G2 Darley Prix Kergorlay (over subsequent Doncaster Cup hero Desert Skyline) and G3 Prix de Barbeville (downing subsequent G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Bateel) in 2017.

Marmelo will be ridden in Tuesday’s big race by Hugh Bowman, regular rider of the legendary racemare Winx.

Canford Cliffs

Five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs will be represented in the 2017 Melbourne Cup by the progressive Wall Of Fire, who also impressed on his Australian debut. Runner up in the G3 Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes earlier in 2017, Wall Of Fire was a good second in the G2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Handicap –when conceding the winner considerable weight. (He accounted for subsequent G1 BMW Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time in the Herbert Power).

Canford Cliffs also has a number of smart looking 2yos to his credit this year headed by Goodthingstaketime, a good winner at Del Mar over the weekend, and Seaella (runner up in the G3 Prix Miesque).
