Ninth first crop winner for What A Winter

24th Jul 2017

Drakenstein Stud’s multiple Equus Champion What A Winter has made a fine start with his first 2yos this season and the champion son of Western Winter was represented by a ninth individual first crop winner when his son Cold Front stormed home, as 8-10 favourite, to win by nearly four lengths over 1000 metres on Monday.

Bred by Eclipse Racing And Breeding, Cold Front was a bargain R50 000 buy at last year’s March Yearling Sale.

Four-time G1 winner What A Winter has certainly made a bright start with his runners this season. His first crop winners to date include three stakes winners, including G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery victor Dutch Philip, a winner of four of his five outings to date, and the undefeated Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Magical Wonderland.

Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland both look strong contenders for the upcoming Cape Racing Awards.

Other notable runners among What A Winter’s first 2yos this season include East Cape Nursery winner Fort Winter, and the promising Warrior’s Rest, who lines up in the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes at Greyville this weekend.

What A Winter, whose yearlings have fetched up to R2.8 million this year, has nine lots on offer at next month’s National Two Year Old Sale.
