Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s inform stallion Oratorio hails from a truly outstanding family, with his relatives including standout sires Alydar, Grand Slam and Plum Bold as well as G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Elmhurst, Japanese star Stinger and Preakness Stakes winner Codex (sire of, among others, former champion South African sire Badger Land).
Oratorio’s impressive female line gained yet a further boost when talented four-year-old filly Kallio (by Scat Daddy) won the G3 Cardinal Stakes at Churchill Downs on Thursday.
Kallio, whose third dam Montage is granddam of Oratorio, made it win number four when scoring a facile three length win in the 2019 Cardinal Stakes while providing jockey Tyler Gaffalione with a second graded win on Thursday’s card.
Kallio had done well in both of her 1 1/8-mile tries this term, and she produced a new career high to topple two-time Canadian champion turf mare Starship Jubilee in the one mile one furlong Cardinal Stakes.
“She’s a bit of a difficult filly,” said Brendan Walsh, who trains Kallio for Madaket Stables, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron, and Bradley Thoroughbreds. “She’s sometimes not always there mentally but when she puts things together she runs very well. She had a good set-up today and seemed to have really relished the (yielding) ground. She’s getting better with age.”
Her triple G1 winning relative Oratorio, whose 50 plus stakes winners include recent Racing Association Stakes winner Viva Rio, has runners in all of the G3 Gauteng Tourism Authority Magnolia Handicap, G2 New Turf Carrier Merchants, and G1 Gauteng Chris Gerber Summer Cup this Saturday.
