Irish Champion Pathfork, who is standing at Sandown Stud in 2018, looks to have a very exciting prospect on his hands in the form of Mighty High.
One of the best two-year-olds around last season, the Johan Janse Van Vuuren trained Mighty High made three wins from three official races when landing an assessment plate over 1200m at Turffontein on Monday.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Mighty High was one of two winners on the day for her jockey Gavin Lerena (who was partnering the filly for a first time). The pair, dispatched 9-10 favourite for Monday’s race, bounced out well and were always travelling sweetly.
When asked to quicken up, Mighty High duly did so and went on to score a long neck win over male rivals Big Mistake and Green Haze.
Now unbeaten in three races, Mighty High stamped herself a filly out of the top drawer when she won the G1 Allan Robertson Championship, over subsequent Golden Slipper winner Celtic Sea, last season.
Out of the Shamardal mare Bold Nimph, Mighty High was a R120 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale.
Pathfork, whose daughter Go The Distance has been nominated for the G3 Diana Stakes, was also responsible for an impressive Greyville winner on Friday when the Alyson Wright trained Gorgeous Guest romped to a three length win over 1200m. The mare has now won three on the bounce and has scored five times in total.
A son of Distorted Humor, and from the family of sire standouts Redoute’s Choice, El Gran Senor and Northern Guest, Pathfork was unbeaten at two, when his wins included the G1 boylesports.com Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (a race won by outstanding sires Roberto, Sir Ivor, El Prado and Dubawi as well as this season’s Investec Derby winning sire New Approach–to name a few).
Pathfork, whose half-brother War Of Will ran second in the recent G1 Summer Stakes, has two lots on November’s Ready To Run Sale in Johannesburg.
