Drakenstein Stud’s red hot young sire What A Winter, fresh off recording a notable treble on LQP weekend, was back in the winners enclosure this Saturday, when the champion sprinter had a pair of winners.
First of the champion’s runners to score was the Mauritzfontein bred (with Wilgerbosdrift) and owned Love Dove.
One of a trio of winners at Kenilworth for trainer Brett Crawford, the 3yo filly dug down deep to break her maiden in game fashion over a mile.
Triple Equus Champion What A Winter is also the sire of the promising Tripod, who followed up a smart second on debut with a convincing win over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday.
Trained by Dorrie Sham, the gelded Tripod was bred by the Eenfontein Stud.
He is one of 32 winners to have emerged from What A Winter’s first crop of runners, which also include Cape Nursery winner Dutch Philip and brilliant filly Magical Wonderland. The latter showed her class when romping to victory in the G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes recently, and is yet to taste defeat over the sprint trips.
Champion First Crop Sire in 2016-2017, What A Winter, whose daughter What A Player ran second in the Aloe Handicap over 1300m on Friday, has also made a smart start with his two-year-olds this season. His juveniles this season include the impressive debut winners Clouds Unfold and Vertical Descent, and, with a number of well bred 2yos yet to face the starter, he looks on course for another tremendous year.
The four time G1 winner has 10 lots on offer at this week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale-including a filly out of an Oaks winning sister to Horse Of The Year Irish Flame (Lot 34), a colt out of Sportsworld’s G3 winning daughter Pacific Charm (Lot 90) and a full-sister to Cape Nursery winner Dutch Philip (Lot 165).
