The progeny of newly crowned Champion Sire for 2016-2017, Silvano, were all the rage at the 2017 National Two Year Old Sale, which took place in Germiston last Thursday and Friday.
In what proved a somewhat flat market, Silvano topped the sires list at the sale, with his 11 lots to sell grossing R4.575 million.
Five of the top ten lots sold at the sale were sired by dual champion South African sire Silvano.
The son of Lomitas was responsible for both the top priced colt and filly at the Two Year Old Sale, with his colt Peren’e (Lot 98) topping the 2017 National Two Year Old Sale when knocked down to John Freeman for R900 000.
Peren’e, who was consigned by Maine Chance Farms, was produced by the Candy Stripes mare Peru –which makes him a full brother to G3 Winter Derby winner and G1 Vodacom Durban July runner up Punta Arenas (who earned in excess of R2 000 000), as well as to recent winner Palo Alto.
Silvano filly Miss Sabina, consigned by Varsfontein Stud (as Agent), was catalogued as lot 141, and this regally bred juvenile was knocked down to trainer Geoff Woodruff for R575 000. Woodruff knows this family well, as he also sent out the filly’s half-brother Master Sabina to win the G1 Sansui Summer Cup twice! The filly is bred on the same Silvano/Sportsworld cross as millionaire Bulsara and former Equus Champion Hot Ticket.
Silvano, whose progeny have won South Africa’s most famous horse-race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July, on four occasions, has enjoyed plenty of success in the sales ring in 2017.
The sire, whose yearlings have fetched up to R6 000 000, made headlines at the National Sale earlier this year, when a colt ,consigned by Lammerskraal Stud and out of the regally bred Western Winter Maxixe, made R4 000 000 at the 2017 National Yearling Sale –which made the colt the top colt sold from the National Sale this year.
