Maine Chance Farms’ reigning champion sire Silvano dominated proceedings in Saturday’s G1 Gauteng Chris Gerber Summer Cup at Turffontein last Saturday, with his sons Zillzaal and Al Mutawakel running first and third respectively.
Both Zillzaal and Al Mutawakel are trained by Sean Tarry and both four-year-olds are bred and owned by Al Adaayit South Africa.
Zillzaal, runner up last season’s G1 SA Derby, was given a superb, front running ride by apprentice Denis Schwartz.
Schwartz kept his gelded mount going into the final stages, with Zillzaal holding on to win the 2000m contest by just under half a length from Equus Champion, and triple G1 winner, Soqrat.
Out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Zulaal, Zillzaal has now earned in excess of R2.1 million in stakes.
He is the 23rd individual G1 winner for Silvano, whose tally of top-level winners includes previous Summer Cup winners Aslan and Flirtation.
Champion Sire in South Africa four times, Silvano was responsible for a trio of winners in South Africa on Saturday with his gelded son Silver Plains winning at Kenilworth and son Imperial Ruby breaking his maiden at Turffontein on Summer Cup day.
The triple G1 winning son of Lomitas has ten lots on offer at January’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale including a colt (Lot 15) out of millionaire Lanner Falcon, a filly (Lot 110) out of a dual G1 winning daughter of Jet Master, and a half-brother (Lot 113) to G1 winning two-year-old Guiness.
