Last season’s Champion Sire Silvano has made a stunning start to the 2017-2018 racing season.
Busy fighting out the title for the leading sire once again this season, Silvano was represented by no fewer than six South African winners on Saturday.
Silvano was responsible for four of the nine winners at Turffontein on Saturday, with his progeny landing races 3,4,6 and 8 respectively.
The Silvano four-timer included an impressive performance by his daughter Sylvan On Fire, who made it win number three, from just five outings, when landing a pinnacle stakes over 1450m at Turffontein on Saturday. Owned and bred by Vanessa Harrison, Sylvan On Fire, who is out of Jet Master’s stakes placed daughter Jet Flyer, is bred on the same Silvano/Jet Master cross as Derby winner Silvano’s Jet and stakes winner Omaticaya.
Another Silvano daughter, Silken, scored her third win when successful in Saturday’s fourth race, while Iridium Silver did likewise when landing the eighth race over 1600m.
Silken is bred on the highly successful Silvano/Al Mufti cross (responsible for G1 winners Bold Silvano, Kings Gambit and last season’s July runner up Al Sahem), as is another of the sire’s recent winners, Vacquero. The latter, who was bred by Maine Chance Farms, got off the mark on Saturday when winning over 1800m at Turffontein for trainer Robbie Sage.
Silvano also had a double at Kenilworth on Saturday where his son Sabbatical scored an impressive win in race two, and another son, Silver de Lange, breaking his maiden over 1900m.
Champion Sire twice in South Africa (he topped the sires list both in 2013 and last season), Silvano is the sire of 72 stakes winners, of which 20 are G1 winners.
He is also responsible for the Equus Champions Aslan, Bold Silvano, Heavy Metal, Kings Gambit, Marinaresco and Vercingetorix.
