Smart debut win for Var filly

25th Aug 2017

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var was represented by an eye catching debut winner at Turffontein yesterday afternoon when his 3yo daughter Varsity Girl won first time out, by four lengths, over 1160m.

Purple Diamond

Trained by Candice Dawson, Varsity Girl was a R950 000 purchase from last year’s Klawervlei Farm Sale.

She is the second winner produced by G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship winner Give Me Five, with the daughter of Goldkeeper also responsible for G2 SA Fillies Nursery runner up Myfunnyvalentine (by Captain Al).

Varsity Girl’s sire Var, South Africa’s reigning Champion Sire of 2YOS, has a very promising crop of sophomores representing him in 2017-2018. Potential 3yo stars running for Var this season include G2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond, G1 Gold Medallion runner up Varallo, G3 Avontuur Umkhomazi Stakes second So Var (a winner of three in a row), and G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery runner up Speedpoint.

The son of Forest Wildcat is also enjoying increasing success as a broodmare sire and is damsire of impressive recent winner Miss Frankel as well as the high-class stakes winners She’s A Giver and Mambonick.
