The Ambiance Stud bred Tokovar romped home impressively at Fairview on Friday, when shedding her maiden by two and a half lengths for trainer Gavin Smith over 1000m, while her paternal 2yo half-brother Whitehaven (bred by Avontuur) won by a long neck at Turffontein on Saturday over 1200m for trainers Mike and Adam Azzie.

Tokovar was one of three winners at Fairview for Var on Friday, with the sire’s Counting Stars and Juan Two Three winning for Sharon Kotzen and Alan Greeff respectively.

Var’s other South African winner over the weekend came when the Geoff Woodruff trained Ilha Da Var ran on smartly to win by 0.8 of a length over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday.

A G1 winning son of Forest Wildcat, Var also enjoyed success in Mauritius this weekend with his son Zen Master, while 2yo Var filly Mia Finola was beaten just a half length when third in Sunday’s G3 Champion Juvenile Stakes at Borrowdale.

South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2YOs last season, Var is once again atop of the 2YO sires list for 2017-2018.

His star performers this season thus far include G1 South African Fillies Sprint winner Sommerlied and SA Nursery hero William The Silent.

A proven sales ring hit (his yearlings have made up to R5 000 000), Var also proved popular at Friday’s Klawervlei Farm Sale, where his son out of Orator’s Daughter made R400 000.

Var has four yearlings on offer at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, with his lots including a half-brother to G1 Champions Cup winner Ivory Trail (Lot 192).
