Tenth first crop winner for What A Winter

31st Jul 2017

Drakenstein Stud’s leading first crop sire What A Winter was represented by a tenth first crop winner at Greyville on Sunday, when his daughter Edith’s Rose scored her first victory over 1000 metres for red hot trainer Glen Kotzen.

Bred by the Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, Edith’s Rose outclassed her ten opponents to score by 2.75 lengths going away over the sprint trip.

She was a R90 000 buy from last year’s National Two Year Old Sale, and lightning could well strike twice, as Edith’s Rose has a full-brother on offer at the upcoming National Two Year Old Sale in Germiston.

Her triple Equus Champion sire What A Winter has made a scintillating start with his first two year olds in 2016-2017 including G3 Cape Nursery winner Dutch Philip, unbeaten filly Magical Wonderland and Listed East Cape Nursery hero Fort Winter.

Another son of the sire, Warrior’s Rest, showed his class by running third in the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes at Greyville on Sunday.

A four time G1 winner, from the same family as Hyperion and Sir Tristram, What A Winter has nine juveniles on offer at the August National Two Year Old Sale.
