Varsfontein Stud’s top class young stallion Gimmethegreenlight has made a tremendous start to his stud career, with his first two crops yielding a slew of graded stakes winners.

The former G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner looks to have another smart sort on his hands in the form of the Varsfontein Stud bred Surcharge, who made it three wins on the bounce when successful at the Vaal on Tuesday.

The well bred colt, who is from the yard of trainer Stuart Pettigrew, justified his status as tote favourite with a commanding 1.1 length at the expense of three-year older rival Tokyo Drift (to whom Surcharge was conceding 2kgs). Promising 3yos Sir David Baird and Keanan’s Rock were well adrift of the winner who looks well above average.

Surcharge, who suffered his only career defeat thus far when second on debut, has now won three of only four outings.

The colt was a R200 000 buy from the 2016 National Yearling Sale.

His sire Gimmethegreenlight, a former leading first crop sire, has a number of high-class 3yos to his credit this season including G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Green Plains and Listed Irridescence Stakes heroine Rose In Bloom. The latter, who made a pleasing 3yo debut recently, holds an entry in the upcoming G2 Cape Fillies Championship.

Gimmethegreenlight is covering some exceptional mares this season and both champion Bela-Bela and Real Princess have tested in foal to the son of More Than Ready.
