Sandown Stud’s successful resident sire Ashaawes looks to have a really smart sort on his hands in the form of Aurelia Cotta.
That promising two-year-old filly made it two wins from as many outings when defeating some bred male rivals in a juvenile plate over 1400m at Turffontein on Classic Day this past Saturday.
One of seven winners on the day for champion trainer Sean Tarry, Aurelia Cotta won emphatically by two and half lengths, and has now won both outings by an aggregate of nearly five lengths.
Bred by James Armitage, Aurelia Cotta looks a filly capable of contesting some of the bigger two-year-old features in the season.
Inbred to Nureyev, she was a R120 000 purchase from last year’s March Yearling Sale.
Her sire Ashaawes is a proven sire of high class stakes horses, with the son of Kingmambo’s previous top performers including multiple graded stakes winner Priceless Jewel, exported Matchem Stakes hero Reim, and the durable G1 performer Sanshaawes, who recently picked up his fourth win in Dubai.
Ashaawes, who shares his sire Kingmambo with outstanding sires Lemon Drop Kid, King Kamehameha and King’s Best, is from the same family as highly successful US sire Broken Vow, sire of champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Champagne Room.
