Umzimkhulu Stakes 1-2 for Gimmethegreenlight

31st Mar 2025

South Africa’s reigning champion sire Gimmethegreenlight’s wonderful few days continued at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday.
Not only did Gimmethegreenlight filllies Green Sapphire and Gimmie’s Countess finish first and second in Monday’s G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes, but another Gimmethegreenlight daughter Give Me Everything made it four wins in a row when she won on Monday.
In landing the 2025 Umzimkhulu Stakes, the progressive Green Sapphire became her sire’s 76th stakes winner.
Trained by Sean Tarry, three-year-old Green Sapphire was given a great ride by S’Manga Khumalo in Monday’s R250 000 contest.
Khumalo bounced his mount out and took the filly to the lead. From there, Green Sapphire kept finding more and she stayed on strongly to claim her biggest win to date by just over a length.
Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Green Sapphire has won four of eight starts, with the filly victorious in four of her last five starts.
Green Sapphire is out of the Trippi mare Sapphire Gem, and is thus bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Trippi cross as the G1 winners Gimme A Prince and She’s A Keeper, as well as the graded stakes winning fillies Green Diamond and Gimmie’s Countess.
Her outstanding sire Gimmethegreenlight has yet another progressive daughter to his name in the form of Give Me Everything. The latter, winner of the Listed Schweppes Cape Fillies Classic in February, made it four wins in a bounce when she prevailed in Monday’s Gallop TV Youtube Channel Class 3 (1600m).
Bred and owned by Varsfontein Stud, three-year-old Give Me Everything is out of the Dynasty mare My Everything.
Gimmethegreenlight, currently the Leading Sire of 2YOs for 2024-2025, had a good day at Turffontein on Saturday. Not only did the champion’s daughter Green Diamond land Saturday’s G2 TAB SA Nursery, but Gimmethegreenlight gelding Wild Intent ran a bang up second in Saturday’s G1 TAB SA Derby.
