Vaal double for Var

3rd Nov 2017

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var enjoyed another mid-week double yesterday, when his daughters La Roquette and Memphis Belle both won their respective races.

Var’s Val De Ra

The beautifully bred La Roquette made it back to back wins when scoring a 0.8 length win for trainer Stanley Ferreira over 1600m, while Memphis Belle scored for a second time over 1000m on the same day.

Bred by the Varsfontein Stud, and out of the Western Winter mare Jodie, La Roquette was the top lot sold from the 2015 National Two Year Old Sale, where she was knocked down for R1.1 million.

Like La Roquette, the well related Memphis Belle, a R180 000 purchase from the 2015 National Two Year Old Sale, should be worth plenty at stud, with this half-sister to Cape Nursery winner Captain Chaos hailing from the same family as G1 winning young sire Red Ray among many others.
Var is certainly no stranger to siring top class fillies, with his daughters including champions Val De Ra (dam of Miss Frankel) and Via Africa, as well as Oaks winner Princess Of Light.

Their sire has enjoyed another good beginning to the season, and Var’s good season could well continue at Turffontein this Saturday.

Via Africa

Var is well represented in feature races this weekend, with Var having runners in all of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup (Purple Diamond, Vicomte), G3 Princess Charlene Starling Stakes (Varsity Girl), G3 Graham Beck Stakes (Flying Free) and Listed Golden Loom Handicap (Rivarine)

The sprint champion has five lots on this month’s CTS Ready To Run Sale, including a half-brother to recent Western Cape Fillies Championship third Rose In Bloom (Lot 102), and a colt bred on the same Var/Fort Wood cross as G1 winning sprinter Contador (Lot 105).
