Last season’s champion sire of 2yos, Var, enjoyed a notable double at the Vaal on Thursday, when the ever green son of Forest Wildcat was responsible for a pair of winning fillies, with both Ilha Da Var and La Roquette scoring on the day.
Bred by the Gold Star Stud, Ilha Da Var proved far too speedy for her 12 rivals as she sped away to post a facile 1.75 maiden win over 1000 metres yesterday.

The three-year-old filly, who was too fast for the well bred Tia, was a R600 000 purchase from the 2016 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale.
Second Var daughter to score on Thursday was the beautifully bred La Roquette, who picked up the second win of her career when successful over 1400m.
Bred by the Varsfontein Stud, La Roquette, an impressive winner on debut over 1000m, cost R1.1 million (when the top lot sold) at the 2015 National Yearling Sale.
Out of the Western Winter mare Jodie, La Roquette is bred on the same Var/Western Winter cross as stakes winners Le Var, Winter Passion and G1 Gold Medallion runner up Varallo.
One of South Africa’s elite stallions, Var’s notable offspring include champions Variety Club, Val De Ra and Via Africa, as well as last season’s G2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond.
The sprint king, whose yearlings have made up to R5 000 000 this year, has five lots on the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale, including a filly out of a six time winning ½ sister to 3 G1 winners (Lot79), a half-brother to this season’s high-class 3yo Rose In Bloom (Lot 102), and a colt from the same family as legendary champion Horse Chestnut (Lot 104).
