Var two-year-olds dominate

19th Feb 2018

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s top class stallion Var is no stranger to siring high class two-year-olds.
The son of Forest Wildcat was last season’s Champion Sire of 2YOs in South Africa, and Var’s past high class 2yos include G1 Gold Medallion winner Villandry, G2 Golden Horseshoe hero Purple Diamond, and fellow graded stakes winners A Womens Way, Normanz,  Twitter, Variety Club and Valdivia.

Purple Diamond

Var’s success with 2yos, however, reached new heights on Saturday, when Var was represented by three individual juvenile winners on one day. Another 2yo by Var, Tarsus, made a pleasing debut when finishing third to Var sired juvenile winner Zinedine on the day.

Var’s two-year-old treble was highlighted by a pair of very impressive debut winners in the form of William The Silent and Zinedine respectively.

Trained by Robbie Sage, William The Silent made a devastating impression when  thrashing brilliant debut winner Van Halen by 2.8 lengths in a juvenile plate over 1000m at Turffontein and he looks well above average.

Bred by Drakenstein Stud, the blue blooded William The Silent was a R600 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale

Cape trainer Vaughan Marshall has enjoyed plenty of success with the progeny of Var and he looks to have a colt out of the top drawer by Avontuur’s star sire in the form of Zinedine.
The latter made a breath taking debut when making all to record a five length win, over some well related two-year-olds, over 1000m at Kenilworth on Saturday. Zinedine looks a likely feature race prospect and he looks sure to add to his sire’s superb record.

A Womens Way

Carioca completed the Var two-year-old treble when she was rewarded for consistency by landing the second race, a maiden juvenile plate for fillies over 1200m, at Kenilworth on Saturday. Bred by Avontuur, Carioca had been rated good enough to take her chance in the Listed Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes at her previous outing, where she was not disgraced behind  the Australian bred winner Traces.

Var has now been represented by juvenile winners this season and he is now the leading sire of 2yos this season. He could well yet defend his title!
