Vercingetorix –a sire of the future

4th Jun 2018

Boland Stud have already enjoyed great success with yearlings from the first crop of Equus Champion Vercingetorix and they look on track for more sales ring success with this promising young stallion at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale.

Top price paid for a Vercingetorix at the recent Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale was R2 200 000 –which was spent by World Wide Bloodstock on a colt consigned by Boland Stud.

Lot 25

At this year’s KZN Sale, Boland will be offering, as agent, Justinian (Lot 25), a bay colt by Silvano’s multiple Gr.1 winning son Vercingetorix.

This colt is out of a speedy winning half-sister, Secret Pledge, to five winners, notably stakes placed seven time winner Secret Chamber, and Gr.3 performer, and seven time winner Silent Partner. The latter was sired by Vercingetorix’s dual champion sire Silvano –which makes Justinian very closely related indeed to that talented galloper.

Justinian’s second dam is top class racemare Secret To Success, a seven time winner up to 1200m. That daughter of Our Casey’s Boy was among the best of her generation at two, when she won the Gr.3 SA Fillies Nursery, beating subsequent Oaks winner Carolina Cherry in the process, and ran third in the Gr.1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship. A half-sister to champion Special Key, Secret To Success trained on well to land the Gr.3 Poinsettia Stakes and retired to the paddocks having banked nearly R500 000 in prize money.

This is also the family of graded stakes winners Captain’s Secret, Narc and millionaire Thunder Key.

This striking Vercingetorix colt is descended from one of the greatest mares in the stud book in the shape of Horama (by Panorama).

Vercingetorix

The latter foundered a tremendous dynasty, with her numerous top class descendants including Epsom Derby winners Sir Percy and Teenoso, English 1000 Guineas star Harayir, Irish 1000 Guineas winners Favoletta and Lacquer, brilliant 2yo Sovereign, and former top class South African sire Hobnob.

Broodmare sire of Justinian is dual Gr.1 winner Black Minnaloushe, whose daughters have already produced such notable group/graded winners as Gr.3 Valedictory Stakes winner Bangkok, Gr.3 Hawke’s Bay Guineas star Amarula, and New Zealand Gr.1 winner Stolen Dance. Recent Dahlia Plate winner Alfeo is another smart performer produced by a daughter of Black Minnaloushe.

This colt has been bred on the same cross that produced Gr.1 winner Orchid Island.
