Weekend double for Philanthropist

4th Sep 2017

Drakenstein Stud’s successful resident sire Philanthropist, whose daughter Sail was honoured at the recent KZN racing awards, has enjoyed a good run of form recently and the strapping son of Kris S had another good double this past weekend.

Singapore Sling

His daughter Weston picked up her second career win when romping home to post a facile 3.75 length win over 1200m on Saturday for trainer Justin Snaith.
The 4yo filly, who is from her sire’s first crop, had been rated good enough to take her chances in the Winter Oaks and a drop back in trip proved of no hindrance to the Drakenstein Stud bred filly.

Philanthropist made it a double when his well regarded 3yo son Edge Of The Sun (like Weston out of a Fort Wood mare) got off the mark at just the second time of asking at Scottsville on Sunday.

A R1.1 million buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale, the Highlands Stud bred Edge Of The Sun is a very laid back horse but he dug down well to defy a challenge from Amritsar and trainer Duncan Howells described his charge as having loads of ability in a post-race interview.

Edge Of The Sun is one of a number of promising sophomores representing Philanthropist this season with others including Golden Slipper third Tsessebe and impressive recent winner Melinda’s Garden.
