Met winner and daughter in foal to top sires
Former J&B Met winner Imperious Sue and her daughter Red Growler are clearly enjoying life at Nutfield Stud.
This picture was snapped as the two grazed contentedly side by side, both heavily pregnant to two of the Cape’s most popular stallions.
Imperious Sue, one of a few elite mares to have won a Grade 1 race and bred a Grade 1 winner, is in foal to last season’s Equus Outstanding Stallion award winner Dynasty, while her daughter carries to the cover of Avontuur’s exciting new sire Oratorio – whose first local crop of foals are causing such a stir.
Red Growler, whose half-sister Imperious Star (by Navarone) won the Gr1 Woolavington Stakes, is a full-sister to Listed Winter Oaks winner Blue Heather.
The daughter of Fort Wood is a proven stakes producer, with her 3yo Trippi filly Sunset Tripp, a good recent winner at Durbanville, having finished second in last season’s Listed Dahlia Plate.
It is interesting to note that Red Growler’s Oratorio foal will be bred on the powerful Danehill/Sadler’s Wells cross.
This cross produced one of Oratorio’s top 2yos – the Group1 Dewhurst Stakes hero Beethoven (the latter being out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Queen Titi). Other high-class performers sired by Oratorio out of Sadler’s Wells line mares include Moonwalk In Paris (Gr3 Firebreak Stakes), Faciascura (Gr3 Premio Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta, and the brilliant Biz The Nurse. The latter not only won the Gr2 Derby Italiano but he became the first 3yo in 27 years to win the Gr1 Gran Premio Di Milano.
Red Growler’s dam Imperious Sue has done it all. A champion on the track (ARCSA Champion Older Female of 1997), Imperious Sue has produced two stakes winners, including the above mentioned Imperious Star. Now her daughters are doing it at stud – truly the record of a wonderful mare.
