Klawervlei’s red hot sire Count Dubois, whose son Perfect Smart won in Hong Kong on Wednesday, was once again in the news when his daughter Cuvee Brut won the G3 Vasco Prix Du Cap at Kenilworth on Saturday.
The Brett Crawford trained filly, who was picking up the first black type win of her career, stayed on nicely to defeat a top class field of fillies and mares in the 1400m contest and will now be aimed at some of the bigger features during the KZN Winter Season.
Bred by the Gary Player Stud Farm, Cuvee Brut has been the soul of consistency during her career thus far. The versatile four-year-old, who races for Mark Wright and Jill Crawford, was trying the 1400m trip for the first time, but won a good race going away from a competitive field. Among those beaten by Cuvee Brut were the stakes winners Flying Ice, Alexis, Sea Cat, Crystal Cavern, and Petala.
Runner up, to the Klawervlei bred Carry On Alice, in the G2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes and third to another Captain Al filly, Princess Royal, in the G2 Horses For Causes Sceptre Stakes, the consistent Cuvee Brut has now won or placed in nine of her 12 outings and has earned over R470 000 in stakes.
Cuvee Brut is one of a number of top class fillies sired by Count Dubois, whose champion son French Navy recently pushed his earnings to over R3.5 million following a smooth victory in the G3 London News Stakes.
Another top class filly sired by Count Dubois is this season’s classy 3yo Madame Dubois, whose last two runs has seen her net victories in the G3 Three Troikas Stakes and G3HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Starling Stakes respectively. To date, the consistent Madame Dubois, who has won or placed in all seven of her career outings, has earned over R500 000 and she looks most unlikely to stop here.
