Moutonshoek’s classy March draft
Moutonshoek is set to send a small, but select draft to the March Yearling Sale, to be held at Durbanville on Saturday and Sunday.
Moutonshoek will offer eight yearlings by a variety of sires – ranging to first season to more established stallions. All yearlings bought off this sale stand to qualify for Africa’s first ever $1 000 000 race – a 1400m race scheduled to take place over 1400m at Kenilworth in January 2016.
Lot 42, a colt, named Galaxy Prince, is by promising young sire King’s Apostle, sire of recent feature placed colt National King. Moutonshoek’s Bennie Van Der Merwe describes the colt: “A compact son of King`s Apostle – first foal – Dam by Al Mufti from the potent Arctic Sweep family. You would know that we were hoping for something from Meissa on the weekend! What a frustrating horse! He has run Eton Square to a short head, just for Eton Square to then win a G2 and run 2nd in the July. He also ran Mujarib to a short head – just for him to win G2`s here and in Dubai!”
Lot 65 is a daughter of former Gp1 Prix Maurice De Gheest winner King’s Apostle. Bennie has this to say of the filly: “Jozi Babe- Scopy daughter of King`s Apostle. Jallad mare as tough as they come. Her babies run – including Texas Flood a decent stayer.”
Lot 101 is a daughter of five times champion 2yo sire Captain Al. A beautifully bred filly, Bennie describes the filly named Diamond Tiara: “Neat daughter of Captain Al out of Western Winter half sister to Tara`s Touch.”
Lot 207 is the fourth of the string to come up for sale. He is a son of last season’s Equus Outstanding Stallion Judpot, sire of 2 Grade One winners in his first crop as well as the very exciting 3yo Mister Cricket. Bennie has this to say of the colt named Thunder Punch: “He is a Judpot Colt out of a well bred daughter of Thunder Gulch who is doing well on the Northern Hemisphere Broodmare Sires list. Potent Family – Lady`s Secret, Mahbooba, Leah`s Secret, Slew the Red etc. Nice individual.”
Lot 262 is a colt by resident sire Mambo In Seattle, whose first crop are now two, is sire of impressive recent winner The Royal Rumba. Bennie describes the colt on offer – “Lot 262 is named San Rufo. He is a lovely, balanced Mambo in Seattle Colt ex Fort Wood x Al Mufti mare from a strong family, made famous by Mike de Kock.”
Lot 264 is a son of last season’s leading first crop sire Antonius Pius, named Hyatt’s Mill. A top-class son of Danzig, Antonius Pius is also the sire of this season’s sensational 2yo Arria. Bennie has this to say about the well bred colt, “Well grown son of Antonius Pius that stands over ground. Ex smart Red Ransom mare. Ideal candidate for the $ 1 M race. Antonius is doing the business with early horses and Red Ransom was a tough 5 furlong record holder – points at an early horse that could bring home the bacon!
Lot 283, is a chestnut colt who goes by the name of Exit Here. A son of Jay Peg, he is a half-brother to the smart filly Eventual Approach, and his second dam is an own sister to a stakes winner. This is the famous “E” family – responsible for such champions as Elusive Fort, Empress Club, Escoleta Fitz and Eventuail.
Bennie rates this colt very highly, saying, “Lot 283 – Best for last! Magnificent son of Jay Peg. Ex Jet Master daughter from potent E family. 1st foal won two and placed 2nd from 3 starts. was here for fillies guineas with DD. Had stable accident. He is a smashing individual to boot.”
