Klawervlei’s resident champion sire Captain Al, South Africa’s leading sire of 2yos by stakes, had yet another feature race winner this weekend when his son Captain Aldo picked up the Listed Wolf Power 1600 at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon.
Trained by part-owner John Gray (who owns Saturday’s big race winner in partnership with Aldo Girolo), the Boland Stud bred gelding was given a masterful ride by Piere Strydom who got his mount up to just deny the talented Klawervlei bred gelding Shadow Ofhis Smile on the line.
A typically consistent son of his sire, Captain Aldo has now won five (and three of his last four) times and has earned over R500 000 –and looks more than capable of adding further to his tally.
Captain Aldo is bred on the same Captain Al/Elliodor cross as G1 Premier Champion Stakes winner Exhilaration, G1 Cape Fillies Guineas runner up Tick Tock, and Listed Irridesence Stakes winner Red Disa.
Remarkably, Captain Aldo gave his sire his ninth individual stakes winner for the 2015-2016 season thus far –with another son of Captain Al, Sergeant Hardy, having won last week’s Listed The Sun International Summer Juvenile Stakes.
Captain Al’s other feature race winners this season are Captain Alfredo, Captain America, Carry On Alice, Eighth Wonder, Fulcrum, Princess Royal,Sergeant Hardy, and Victoria Lavelle.
Understandably, Captain Al’s progeny’s ongoing success on the track has ensured their sire remains in great demand.
At the recent Cape Premier Yearling Sale, a filly by Captain Al set a new South African record for a filly sold at public auction in this country when fetching R5.25 million.
He has a single lot on offer at Sunday’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale -a filly who is a full sister to 2yo stakes winner Princess Alberta and a half sister to G2 Sceptre Stakes victress Badger’s Cove.
