Oratorio star on track for G1 Australian Cup

Avontuur’s resident sire Oratorio, whose first crop of South African bred yearlings go on sale at the CTICC this week, is responsible for numerous top class and tough gallopers.
One of his very best sons to date is the tough as teak Australian galloper Mourinho, a millionaire and winner of last year’s G1 Underwood Stakes.

Now an eight-year-old, Mourinho appears on track to defend his title in Saturday’s G2 Australia Stakes, a 1200m race run at Moonee Valley.
The gelding’s trainer Peter Gelagotis is delighted with his charge, and he is hoping to point Mourinho towards a start in the G1 Australian Cup later in the year.

Gelagotis said of his gallant old warrior, “He has come back super, you wouldn’t know he is an eight-year-old. “I think the horse is in pristine order. We chanced our arm last year and by a left-field fluke we won the race. We are going into this year’s renewal with an open mind and we’re aware that it is only his second start.”

To date, Mourinho has won 11 races (six group races) and over AUS $1.3 million in stakes.
