Potala relative is a classic prospect
Highlands Farm’s new sire Potala Palace, who shares his sire Singspiel with South Africa’s leading first crop sire Lateral, hails from an outstanding female line.
The Grade One winning Potala Palace is related to numerous high-class European performers – including classic winners Golan (2000 Guineas) and North Light (Epsom Derby).
Potala Palace’s potent female line received yet another boost when Tarfasha (like Potala Palace a descendant of Sadler’s Wells) won Wednesday’s Group 3 Irish Stallions EBF Blue Wind Stakes at Naas. The lightly raced filly looked most impressive when running out a 3.25 length winner of the 2000m event, and looks a really smart sort in the making.
Tarfasha, who has now won two of her four outings, could now be aimed at the Group 1 Investec Oaks for owner Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum.
The daughter of New Approach is out of the unraced Groom Dancer mare Grecian Dancer. The latter, a truly exceptional broodmare whose offspring include five stakes horses, is out of a daughter of Edinburgh – the third dam of Grade One Premier’s Champion Stakes hero Potala Palace.
Grecian Dancer, dam of Tarfasha, is also the dam of top-class performers Saddler’s Rock and Galileo Rock. The latter ran third in the 2013 Investec Derby and second in the Irish Derby of the same year before suffering a fatal injury at work.
Remarkably, this is ultimately the same family as unbeaten Gr3 Musidora Stakes winner Madame Chiang – who like Potala Palace is a direct descendant of important tap-root mare Simons Shoes.
Potala Palace is set to start his stud career at Highlands Farm this year.
