Promising Marchfield – one of Canada’s leading 1st crop sires
Moutonshoek’s exciting young stallion Marchfield has made a pleasing start with his first Northern Hemisphere runners this season.
At the time of writing, the champion son of A P Indy currently ranks as Canada’s second leading first crop sire by prize money.
To date, Marchfield has been represented by five first crop horses which have run in the money – from just a handful of runners.
He also ranks above such Grade 1 winners as Afleet Express (Travers Stakes), Mast Track (Hollywood Gold Cup), and All American (Emirates Stakes) on North America’s leading first crop sires log.
A dual Canadian Champion, Marchfield won or placed in nine stakes races during his career.
The earner of over $1 million in prize money, Marchfield shares his sire A P Indy with the outstanding stallions Bernardini, Judpot, Malibu Moon and Pulpit – to name but a few.
The champion hails from an outstanding female line. His dam, Pico Teneriffe, was a top class racemare, who went on to be named Canada’s Broodmare Of The Year in 2009.
Pico Teneriffe (who is by the great sire Red Ransom) is a half sister to three stakes horses, as well as Musical Minister, the dam of Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile runner up Minister Eric. The latter is very closely related to Marchfield, by being A P Indy’s brilliant, but ill-fated, son Old Trieste.
Among the numerous top sires from this family is Ride The Rails, whose great son Candy Ride is the sire of the top horse in North America this year – the undefeated, Breeders Cup Classic hope Shared Belief.
Marchfield’s first South African foals are arriving this season.
