Silvano dominates world’s top features
South Africa’s leading sire for the 2012-2013 season, Silvano, was responsible for two major winners – on two different continents!
Following up on son Heavy Metal’s victory in the R3 500 000 Vodacom Durban July, another son of Silvano won one of the world’s leading races, this time in Germany.
Lucky Speed scored a three parts of a length victory in the 144th running of the Group One Deutsches Derby, Germany’s leading classic contest. The colt was winning for the third time in four starts, and had previously won the G3 Bavarian Classic.
Lucky Speed made amends for grandsire Lomitas’ defeat. Lomitas, sire of Silvano, could only finish second in the 1991 Derby, but was later named Germany’s Champion 3yo and Horse of the Year.
SIlvano, who was champion sire in Slovakia in 2007, has now been represented by no fewer than 13 Grade/Group One winners worldwide. This season, his six Gr1 winners have included horses who scored at the highest level in distances ranging from 1200m to 2400m.
