Sire’s sole crop on offer at Cape Sale
The talented, but ill-fated sire Scarlet Letter, will be represented by his sole crop when the Cape Sale gets underway this weekend.
The son of the great Danehill has his only crop on offer at the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale (Book 2), and already a number of trainers have been impressed by what they have seen thus far.
Scarlet Letter himself was a brilliantly fast horse, winning six races from just 11 starts, despite suffering an injury in training. Champion trainer Mike de Kock says of the blazing speedster that he was one of the fastest he trained – quite a compliment!
He reeled off three wins on the trot, but it was the manner of his wins which impressed all who saw Scarlet Letter. He was a horse with tremendous speed and would just blitz his hapless rivals.
One of over 340 stakes winners sired by Danehill, Scarlet Letter has a superb female line. A half-brother to five winners, including Royal Ascot G2 winner Ouqba, Scarlet Letter is out of a mare by the great sire, and broodmare sire Machiavellian (also damsire of top European sire Shamardal).
Importantly he is one of his sire’s speedier sons – and Danehill’s fast sons have generally excelled at stud, with the likes of Danehill Dancer, Exceed And Excel and Fastnet Rock all falling into this category.
He has 5 lots on sale this weekend:
Lot 94 is a half-brother to 2 winners, and is out of the smart, stakes placed Western Winter mare Tin Legs. From the family of multiple champion Star Effort.
Lot 118 is a half-sister to 2 winners, her dam being the stakes winner Ziggy Stardust. This smart filly is from the family of the high-class stakes winner El Pescadoro.
Lot 132 is a half-sister to 3 winners. Her dam, by Model Man, is a half-sister to high-class juvenile Judgemental, and this is the family of Argentina’s Horse of the Year Mountdrago.
Lot 136 is a half-brother to 2 winners, who between them have won 12 times. His dam is a half-sister to the dam of champion sprinter Mythical Flight, and this colt is truly bred to fly!
Lot 137 is a half-sister to 2 winners, out of a mare by the great broodmare sire Elliodor. This is a top international family whose members include G1 winner Slew The Dragon.
Only too often has a stallion’s progeny come good after his death, and this may well be the case with the star crossed Scarlet Letter!
