Son of Silvano nominated for Melbourne Cup
South Africa’s Champion sire of 2012-2013 Silvano, could be represented in the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup of 2014 – Australia’s most famous race and one of the world’s great handicaps.
Silvano’s son Lucky Speed, winner of the Group 1 Deutsches Derby last year, is one of 148 horses nominated for the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, due to be run at Flemington racecourse on November 4th.
Lucky Speed was one of Germany’s top 3yos in 2013 when he also won the Group 3 Bavarian Classic. In 2014, the colt has been placed in each of his three outings, and was third last time out, beaten two lengths, in the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Berlin.
One of South Africa’s elite stallions, Silvano has been represented by 49 stakes winners to date and enjoyed another great season in 2013-2014, when represented by no fewer than 11 black type winners.
His 13 local Grade 1 winners include a pair of Vodacom Durban July winners in Bold Silvano and Heavy Metal respectively, while Silvano’s most recent top flight winner came when his son Wavin’ Flag won the Gr1 eLan Property Group Gold Cup last season. Major South African races won by progeny of Silvano include the July (twice), Gold Cup (twice), Cape Fillies Guineas, Summer Cup (twice), Cape Derby, SA Oaks, SA Derby (twice), Daily News 2000, SA Classic, J&B Met and Champions Challenge.
A son of German champion Lomitas, Silvano has 4 lots on offer at next month’s Cape Ready To Run Sale – including a half-brother to Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Sparkling Gem (lot 100).
Standing at Maine Chance Farms, Silvano has a 2014 stud fee of R200 000.
