The Duke shines!
Drakenstein Stud’s exciting new stallion Duke Of Marmalade had a weekend to remember.
The champion son of Danehill was widely admired at Drakenstein Stud’s Stallion Day, which was held at the farm on Friday.
Duke Of Marmalade, who was paraded alongside fellow Drakenstein sires Trippi, Horse Chestnut, Philanthropist and What A Winter, attracted plenty of praise from many of the breeders in attendance.
The big bay ten-year-old looked in great shape as he was paraded, and behaved like a complete gentleman during the parade.
Duke Of Marmalade was once again in the headlines on Sunday, when his son Hall of Mirrors won the prestigious Group 2 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh. The 4yo gelding, like his sire, Hall Of Mirrors is trained by Aidan O’Brien, and he was partnered to victory by Seamie Heffernan.
Hall Of Mirrors, who was winning the first stakes race of his career, impressed with his half-length victory over the Group 1 winners Kingsbarns and Parish Hall, and he should not stop here. Incidentally, the gelding hails from the same family as Klawervlei Stud’s successful stallion Count Dubois.
The Royal Whip has been won by some great horses over the years, with past winners including the likes of champions Alleged, Pilsudski, Zomaradah (dam of Dubawi), High Chaparral, and Fame And Glory, to name a few.
Duke Of Marmalade has been represented by 17 black type performers in 2014 alone.
His stakes winners this year include the high-class fillies So Many Shots (Gp3 Premio Mario Incisa Della Rochetta), Wannabe Better (Gp3 Ballycorus Stakes) and the brilliant Group 1 performer Venus de Milo.
A five time Group 1 winner and Cartier Champion, Duke Of Marmalade earned over $2.7 million on the track, and shares his sire Danehill with the outstanding stallions Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur, Danehill Dancer, Fastnet Rock, Exceed And Excel as well as Avontuur’s exciting young prospect Oratorio.
He will stand for an introductory fee of R100 000 in 2014 and his first book of mares will include the outstanding racemares Beach Beauty, Lady Windermere and Sparkling Gem.
