15th 2yo winner of the season for Var
16th May 2018
Last season’s Champion Sire of 2YOs Var continues to enjoy success with his two-year-olds in 2017-2018.
The G1 winning son of Forest Wildcat was represented by his 15th juvenile winner for the current season when his 2yo son Montego Bay won in open company at Kenilworth on Tuesday.
Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, the Joey Ramsden trained colt, who had been very green when fifth on debut, burst clear to register a length win over 1000m at just the second time of asking.
Montego Bay, who was produced by the stakes winning Cape Cross mare Torra Bay, was a R1.7 million buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
He is one of numerous promising juveniles representing Var this season, with others including G2 SA Nursery winner William The Silent, G2 SA Fillies Nursery second Ghaalla and stakes performers Heavenly Risk, Dewali, and Mia Finola.
William The Silent is one of two horses nominated for the Highveld Feature Season award of Champion Two-Year-old Colt.
Var, whose 21 G1 horses include champions Variety Club, Val De Ra and Via Africa, looks once again to be strongly represented at Scottsville’s Day Of Speed on May 26th.
His daughters Ghaalla and Elle Va are both nominated for the day’s G1 Allan Robertson Championship, with Var also responsible for three potential runners in the same days G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion.
Var’s Casual Diamond, Sommerlied and Exquisite Touch are all entered for the G1 South African Fillies Sprint (a race won previously by Var daughters Val De Ra and Via Africa), while Var’s G1 Computaform Sprint third Speedpoint has been nominated for that day’s G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint.
Var, whose yearlings have made up to R5 million, will be represented by four lots at July’s KZN Yearling Sale, including a half-brother to G1 Champions Cup winner Ivory Trail (Lot 192).
