Varsfontein Stud’s bang in-form resident sire Gimmethegreenlight is well represented in the nominees for the upcoming RA Highveld Feature Season Awards, which well be announced in the Aquanaut Room at Turffontein on May 23rd.
Gimmethegreenlight’s multiple graded stakes winning daughter Green Plains has been nominated for the Champion Three-Year-Old Filly while the sire’s son Surcharge is one of four nominated for the Champion Three-Year-Old Colt award.
Bred by the Gary Player Stud, the Sean Tarry trained Green Plains has won or placed in eight of her 11 outings, with her principal victories including the 2017 G2 SA Fillies Nursery and G3 Pretty Polly Stakes as well as the recent G2 Highlands Stud Camellia Stakes. Runner up in last year’s G1 Allan Robertson Championship, Green Plains, who looks a leading contender for this month’s G1 South African Fillies Sprint, has already banked over R890 000 in stakes money.
Her paternal half-brother Surcharge, who was bred by Varsfontein Stud, won this season’s G3 Tony Ruffel and Listed Secretariat Stakes, before finishing second in all of the G1 SA Derby, G1 SA Classic and G2 Gauteng Guineas. The Stuart Pettigrew trained colt, unplaced just once in ten outings, has earnings of over R1.5 million and holds an entry in the 2018 G1 Vodacom Durban July.
Former G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight was represented by his ninth juvenile winner this season when daughter Gimme Crystals made a winning debut at Fairview last Saturday. The Ascot Stud bred filly, a R90 000 buy from the 2017 National 2YO Sale, scored a half length win at the first time of asking over 1000m and looks to have the scope to build on this win.
Her sire Gimmethegreenlight will be represented by nine lots at July’s KZN Yearling Sale.
