Juvenile double for Gimmethegreenlight
18th May 2018
Varsfontein Stud’s in-form resident sire Gimmethegreenlight has been enjoying a great run of success of late and the G1 winning son of More Than Ready was at it again on Thursday.
This time, a pair of winning two-year-olds kept Gimmethegreenlight’s name in the news, with both Barahin and Anneka winning their respective races at the Vaal.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the Mike de Kock trained Barahin caught the eye when romping home to an effortless two length maiden win, over 1200m, at the somewhat restrictive odds of 4-10.
The colt, beaten less than one and a half lengths into fourth on debut, was produced by the Silvano mare Mocha Special and was a R2.6 million buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale.
Gimmethegreenlight was back in the winners enclosure after the very next race on Thursday, when his daughter Anneka broke her maiden by 1.3 lengths, when downing Australian bred Sweet Red over 1200m metres.
Trained by Sean Tarry, who also handles Gimmethegreenlight’s star daughter Green Plains, Anneka was bred by the Lammerskraal Stud.
The filly, who was winning at just the second time of asking, was a R400 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Champion First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, has now been represented by 11 two-year-old winners this season –with the promise of plenty more to come. His other juvenile winners this season include Listed Somerset 1200 third Crown Guardian, and impressive recent first time out scorer Gimme Crystals.
Another 2yo by Gimmethegreenlight is impressive winner Sulka, who holds an entry for the upcoming G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion.
Gimmethegreenlight, himself a G1 performer and stakes winner at two, is no stranger to siring high class juvenile winners, with past notable 2yo winners including G1 Premiers Champion Stakes winner Gunner, G2 Umkhomazi Stakes hero Hack Green and G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Green Plains.
