Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var has enjoyed another good season in 2017-2018 and the former sprint king was at it again on Friday.

Star Burst Galaxy

This time it was Var’s four-year-old daughter Star Burst Galaxy who was in the spotlight, with the Tara Laing trained filly showing her class at Fairview.

Bred by Dr Ian Heyns, Star Burst Galaxy took her tally of wins to nine when scoring a comfortable 1.75 length victory in the Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes over 1200 metres, downing East Cape champion Beataboutthebush and G3 Starling Stakes heroine Via Seattle in the process.

It was a second black type victory for the bay, who had previously won the Listed Lady’s Pendant earlier this year.

Var

Out of the Doowaley mare Majestic Star, the consistent Star Burst Galaxy (just once unplaced in her last 10 outings) has now banked R762 675 in stakes and she will be a valuable broodmare prospect when she retires to the paddocks.

Her sire Var, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2016-2017, is again having a stellar season, with his notable performers including G1 South African Fillies Sprint winner Sommerlied and G2 SA Nursery king William The Silent.

Once again on top of the country’s Leading Sires of 2YOs list, Var will be represented by two runners in next Saturday’s G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe (a race won by Var’s son Purple Diamond in 2017), in the form of Provocateur and Rule The Night respectively.
