Avontuur’s leading sire Var has thoroughly dominated recent runnings of the Listed Bauhinia Handicap, and his success in this feature continued on Saturday.
When Var filly Winter Passion won Saturday’s Bauhinia Handicap, she became the fourth Var filly to win the race in the past five years. This is a truly stunning achievement for Var – also sire of Saturday Gr3 Burj Nahaar runner up, and dual Horse Of The Year, Variety Club.
Esterel won the race back in 2010, Variometer captured the prize in 2012, La Volta a year later, and Winter Passion was successful in 2014.
Winter Passion, who has now won three in a row, was produced by the winning Western Winter mare, Winter Parade. She is the second feature race winner produced by Winter Parade – with Winter Passion’s full brother, Le Var, having won the Listed Dahlia Plate back in 2012.
Var, who has now sired 20 stakes winners, enjoyed a good weekend. The former Gr1 Prix de l’Abbaye winner had a hatrick of winners with Winter Passion, Mastermind and Dollar Dazzler.
To date, Var’s offspring, which include 14 Grade One performers, have earned in excess of R41 million in prize money.
Also sire of recent Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap winner Miss October, Var is well represented on both the March Yearling Sale and Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
He has seven lots on offer at the March Sale – including a colt whose second dam is champion Icy Air, and a colt from the family of top-class racemare Fanciful.
Var also has 29 choicely bred yearlings on offer at the 2014 National Sale. This string includes a full-brother to champion Val De Ra, a half-sister to Gr2 Sceptre Stakes winner Reflective Image, and a half-brother to this season’s Gr3 Cape Summer Stayers Handicap winner Tippuana Moon.
