The Collingwood Stud bred Cosmic Burst made an eye catching winning debut when she won first time out at Scottsville on Sunday.
The filly, who had been plagued by injuries beforehand, is held in high regard by connections, and the flashy chestnut can hardly have been more impressive as she skated home to score by three lengths over 1000m in soft underfoot conditions.
Cosmic Burst, who races for Messrs Govender, Naidoo, Drs K and M Naidoo, is out of the Lizard Island mare Colour Burst, who is back in foal to Var and who will have a Silvano yearling on offer later in the year.
Cosmic Burst is certainly bred to fly- her sire Var being a winner of the G1 Prix de L’Abbaye (over 1000m), and her third dam being none other than former G1 Golden Slipper winner Burst.
She is one of a number of talented sophomores representing Var this season, with the latter having been represented by seven stakes performing 3yos thus far, including G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas runner up Our Destiny.
South Africa’s premier source of precocity and speed, Var once again enjoyed good success at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale last week. He ended up as the sales’ fourth leading sire by aggregate, with Var’s 21 lots fetching a gross total of R13.3 million and averaging R633,333.
Top priced Var was lot 33, a filly out of Muamba who was knocked down to China Horse Club for R1.9 million.
