Drakenstein Stud’s multiple Equus Champion and increasingly successful stallion What A Winter enjoyed another notable double this weekend, when his sons Inertia and Apollo Ace both won at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The Glen Kotzen trained Inertia broke his maiden when he powered home to beat favourite Salt in Kenilworth’s second race, a maiden plate over 1200m. Bred by Dave Hampton, the handsome gelding was not winning out of turn, with Inertia having been placed in each of his last three starts. Inertia, who is out of the Fort Wood mare Veronica, is bred on the same What A Winter/Fort Wood cross as former 2yo stakes winner Fort Winter.

Inertia’s paternal half-brother Apollo Ace not only provided What A Winter with a double on the day, he also gave trainer Joey Ramsden and jockey S’Manga Khumalo a double on Saturday when he stormed home to win the fifth race –going away by half a length. Recently gelded, the consistent three-year-old has now won or placed in eight of his ten outings.
Out of the Captain Al mare Me ‘N You, Apollo Ace was a R625 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

What A Winter, South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017, is enjoying another good season this year, with his offspring headed up by impressive G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold. The latter, a winner of six of only eight outings, pushed her earnings to over R1.4 million when downing G1 winners Lady In Black, Front And Centre and Snowdance when she won the 2019 Majorca Stakes on Sun Met day recently.

What A Winter is also enjoying a good season with his two-year-olds in 2018-2019. Of his 11 two-year-olds to race thus far, eight have either won or finished in the money –with the promise of plenty more to come!
